On their new album, the New Zealand band Surf City continues their love affair with psychedelia and guitar-pop, drawing inspiration from their predecessors The Flying Nun and The Chills, as well as The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Animal Collective. The album, named after a conversation overheard in a bar, was recorded between New Zealand, New York, and South Korea. There's a clear progression from their previous album, *Kudos*: a richer context, deeper lyrics, and an unconventional melancholy. Musically, the band ambitiously develops its resonant heavy fuzz-rock side.
