LEGENDS OF MALIAN MUSIC. With Super Biton de Ségou, we literally go back in time to the 1960s and 1970s, encountering Louis Armstrong in 1960 and Duke Ellington in 1967 during their African tours, which left a mark and inspired countless musicians. We also see the beginnings of amplified music, Radio-Brazzaville and Congolese music influenced by Cuban percussion, as well as the national artistic and cultural biennials that rewarded the best orchestras in Mali. All these crucial elements allowed Mali to develop state-sponsored musical orchestras that shone throughout Africa: the Rail Band de Bamako, les Ambassadeurs du Motel, the Goffé Star de Kayes; the Kéné Star de Sikasso, the Kanaga de Mopti, the Ensemble Instrumental du Mali, the Mystère Jazz de Tombouctou and, of course, the Super Biton de Ségou. This first volume, titled 'Afro.Jazz.Folk Collection', gathers a total of 8 emblematic tracks by Super Biton, recorded over the years between 1970 and 1980 and released on their vinyl or cassette albums. Difficult to find today and selected by the three remaining members of the group, Modibo Diarra, Mama Sissoko, and Aboubacar Kissa (who recently passed away), these tracks are a vibrant testament to the musical effervescence that reigned in Ségou and Mali during those years of overflowing cultural creativity and a tribute to all its talented members. “THIS GREAT MALIAN ORCHESTRA OF THE 70S, LIKE THE SUPER RAIL BAND DE BAMAKO, HELPED LAUNCH MALIAN MUSIC TO THE TOP...” --- LE MONDE ---. “ICONIC & TIMELESS” --- RFI ---.
