An album as good as 'Ghosts of the Great Highway' should never be out of print. This album, Mark Kozelek's first as Sun Kil Moon, continues and perfects his work with his previous band, Red House Painters. It's a collection of stoic, Americana-infused storytelling songs with shimmering guitars, moderate tempos, dark moods, and wandering melodies. His voice, reminiscent of a certain Neil Young, particularly in the ease with which he soars into high notes only to nonchalantly drop back down into lower notes and rawer textures. 'Ghosts of the Great Highway' is in some ways a road narrative, a journey through the Midwest, the masculine equivalent of Lucinda Williams' 'Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.' A hypnotic album that echoes both the physical paths we travel and the geography of the emotions that pursue us.
