The five members of Sun June spent their early years spread across the United States, from the wilds of the Hudson Valley to the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles. After spending their college years in the cold, dark winters of the Northeastern United States, Laura Colwell and Stephen Salisbury found themselves in the vibrant melting pot of inspirations that is Austin, Texas. Meeting through their work on Terrence Malick's film Song to Song, the duo was immediately drawn to the city's lively small clubs and honky-tonk scene, and the fact that there was always an instrument within reach, always someone to play with. Sun June returns with Somewhere, their brand new album. A record that feels significantly more current than its predecessor. Since then, Laura and Stephen have become a couple, which has had a profound effect on their work. If Years dealt with how loss evolves, Somewhere this time deals with how love evolves. Somewhere presents a gentle but eminently pronounced maturation of Sun June's sound. A second record full of quiet revelations, eleven songs bristling with love and desire. It shows a band at the height of their collective power, a marked evolution from the band that developed that first record, but also a band once again able to transport the listener through a fascinating new landscape, somewhere between the city and the countryside, between the head and the heart; neither here nor there, but certainly somewhere.
