STONED JESUS is a true trailblazer. Though often associated with the stoner community, frontman Igor Sydorenko has experimented in folk, prog, pop and alt rock while nodding to doom. But after hitting the road to celebrate the band’s 15th anniversary, Sydorenko and his new bandmates set out to seek even greater creative heights.
The ‘Songs to…’ trilogy covers all the different phases of STONED JESUS. Like scaling a desert mountain, the massive opener of ‘Songs to Sun’ slowly unfolds with the horizon before igniting into a powerful psychedelic groove. Further nods to ‘Seven Thunders Roar’ and ‘The Harvest’ appear throughout the album. The first single “Shadowland” notably fires off the band’s catchiest riff since “Here Come the Robots”.
An existential shadow hangs over ‘Songs to Sun’. The album reflects the unstable ground Sydorenko navigated after the previous band dissolved. But whether it is depression, a breakup, or a tour, STONED JESUS is guided by the spirit of innovation. Even if the band tends to be people-pleasers, “Low” breaks the mould by being the band’s first track with blast beats.
“I’m tired of ideals, they’re fragile and unreal”. Written many years ago but deemed too personal to be shared until now, “Quicksand” closes the album and sees STONED JESUS shed all preconceived notions to prepare for the next dark phase of this epic journey.
