Under the reign of Elizabeth I, some of the greatest English composers (Philips, Dering, Dowland) chose exile. Others remained in England in spiritual isolation. Among them were Robert White, whose Lamentations rank among the greatest masterpieces of English music, and William Byrd whose most troubled music was specially set to music by Huw Watkins for stile antico.
