For this fifth studio recording, Kuniko, a percussionist of extraordinary talent, returns to the music of Steve Reich, a composer she has championed since her first recording in 2011. In Drumming, Kuniko delivers a performance worthy of a tour de force of this work, considered the first masterpiece of minimalism. Interpreting all the parts herself and adopting the "multi-track" approach so appreciated in Kuniko plays reich, Kuniko once again showcases the technical virtuosity and flawless musicality that have established her reputation. This foundational work employs Reich's characteristic phasing technique; subtle changes in timing and timbre bring forth the soundscape of a series of rhythmic loops that gradually evolve, creating a completely immersive experience. A fascinating performer, Kuniko is giving a series of concerts in Europe and Japan as part of the celebrations for the composer's 80th anniversary. Drumming once again demonstrates the musical intelligence and talent of the percussionist, which led Reich to describe her as "a top-notch percussionist."
