"THE EMANCIPATION SONGS OF YOUNG BENINESE WOMEN." --- NOVA ---. In Benin, seven young girls sing of the pride and determination of a generation eager for freedom: together, they form Star Feminine Band, a group as resounding as it is necessary. It was in Natitingou, a peaceful town in the northwest of the country, that the story began a few years ago. In this region where prospects for young women are often limited to poorly paid jobs, early pregnancies, or forced marriages, a musician decided to give a voice to those concerned. Through a call for applications on a local radio station, André Baléguémon met seven girls from surrounding villages. None of them had ever played an instrument. Under André's tutelage, they learned to play together and united around a desire: to communicate their culture, their language, and their demands. Out of the blue, a band of young girls from a remote region of Benin shakes up the garage rock idiom with astonishing freshness, inventiveness, and energy, playing in tune, loud and clear.
