Only Lovers Left Alive

Description

The soundtrack of Jim Jarmusch's film, Only Lovers Left Alive, is a collaboration between SQÜRL (Jim Jarmusch, Carter Logan, and Shane Stoneback) and Dutch lutenist Jozef Van Wissem. It reflects the distinct textures of Detroit and Tangier, connecting the ancient and modern sounds of the territory, intertwined and timeless. The film's album was originally released worldwide in 2014 and quickly earned the group the Cannes Soundtrack Award, awarded by a consortium of film and music critics. In the following years, it remained a favorite among critics and fans, who continued to hunt for the few existing copies. In this soundtrack, the pre-Baroque lute weaves into the grain of 21st-century guitar, heavy rhythms, Moroccan percussion, synth bass, field recordings, and numerous other sound effects creating a broad cinematic tapestry. Singer Madeline Follin (Cults) appears on the reinterpretation of Wanda Jackson's hit "Funnel of Love." The dominant voice of Zola Jesus also rises in crescendo on Van Wissem's "In Templum Dei." Not to mention the intimate and evocative "Hal" by Yasmine Hamdan, recorded during the film's shoot and mixed by SQÜRL.
