The Mexican duo Sotomayor makes a grand return with WABI SABI, their first album in six years, which also celebrates the band's 10th anniversary. Siblings Raúl and Paulina Sotomayor have built a reputation through their harmonious fusion of electronic rhythms and Latin American sounds. They create dance music with international scope, headlining the biggest festivals in Latin America and selling out shows across the Americas and Europe. Composed in just two weeks at Raúl's Kaya Records studio in Mexico City and recorded over ten days in Puerto Rico with producer Eduardo Cabra (aka Visitante de Calle 13), winner of 28 Grammy Awards, WABI SABI is both punchy and precise. The album blends house, afrobeat, cumbia, dancehall, plena, and kuduro, drawing inspiration from artists such as Jamie xx, Polo & Pan, Lewis Of Man, and Nu Genea, ultimately arriving at a sound that is uniquely their own. The lyrics explore themes of cycles, resilience, and self-discovery. It is their most electronic album to date, but live percussion and organic textures keep it grounded in the rhythms that have always been at the heart of their music. After the 2020 release of their breakthrough album Orígenes, also produced by Cabra, Sotomayor embarked on tours of the world's biggest festivals and venues. The pandemic abruptly interrupted this meteoric rise. During this period, the two siblings dedicated themselves to their respective solo projects. Now reunited, Sotomayor returns with a sound shaped by their shared history and their separation. WABI SABI takes its name from a Japanese concept that celebrates the beauty of imperfection, an ideal perspective for these recent years of transformation. This album not only celebrates ten years of musical collaboration; it bears witness to the rediscovery of the group's identity and the exploration of surprising new sounds.
