The works on this album document the evolution of Bartok's aesthetic, from the late Romantic nationalist style of the symphonic poem "Kossuth" and the openly Romantic Four Piano Pieces to the folk-tinged Sonatina and the bubbling Piano Sonata (two early sonatas have survived), composed in 1926, and which correspond to his mature style. Sonya Bach studied with Lazar Bermann and Alicia de Larrocha and has recorded concertos by Bach, études by Chopin, Mussorgsky and Rachmaninov for Rubicon.
