It was recorded in a single studio session on June 22, 1956 by sound engineer Rudy van Gelder, himself considered one of the greatest sound engineers in the history of music, and jazz in particular. Sonny Rollins, tenor saxophonist and composer with numerous jazz standards to his credit, is one of the most important jazz musicians in history and has also played with his most illustrious contemporaries such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Max Roach, and Art Blakey.
