The works on this record span the composer's entire life. The Handel Variations overflow with energy, pianistic brilliance, and a certain youthful pathos; the two Rhapsodies Op. 79 are of a serious and dramatic spirit, while the Fantasy Op. 116 breathes the air of melancholy, the reminiscences of old age and painful resignation (Wiegenlieder meiner Schmerzen, as Brahms called his last Intermezzi).
