Multidisciplinary artist Jasper Marsalis is releasing his debut album as Slauson Malone 1, “EXCELSIOR.” The album is his first release on the iconic label Warp Records and has garnered pre-release praise from The New York Times, which described it as “deeply ambitious, engaging, and full of winning eccentricities,” and Pitchfork, which highlighted it in their list of most anticipated fall releases. The word “excelsior” embodies perpetual ascent. Slauson Malone 1 envisions it as a metaphorical sword, one that, in someone's possession, grows ceaselessly until it cleaves the Earth in a grand finale. This metaphor becomes his goal to explore all facets of masculinity with newfound clarity, as he interrogates his own lived experiences through songs and movements throughout the album. “EXCELSIOR” takes the form of a collection of personal essays, with vignettes that interweave and isolate, but ultimately serve to form Slauson Malone 1’s most personal and captivating musical work to date.
