Fire Of God'S Love

Description

Fire of God’s Love is the legendary 1973 album by Australian nun Sister Irene O’Connor, a suite of songs that are at once heartfelt, spiritual, and unintentionally psychedelic, dedicated to personal reflection and inner awakening. Composed of original folk spirituals, performed by O’Connor with angelic vocals, guitar, electric organ, and drum machine, the album was recorded and mixed in an astonishingly futuristic way by fellow nun and sound engineer Marimil Lobregat. This authorized reissue, the first since 1976, is brought to us by Freedom To Spend, who give new life to this treasure with careful restoration and remastering. Sister Irene’s music grew out of her early musical experiences in Singapore in the 1950s, where she taught music to children with learning disabilities. Joined by Sister Marimil in Sydney over a decade later, they together conceived the tracks for Fire of God’s Love on a Teac 3340S 4-track tape recorder. O’Connor’s crystalline vocals, blended with organ swells and reverberations, create an almost supernatural atmosphere, while the lyrics, in English, Latin, and Malay, explore universal themes such as grace, light, and divine love. The album combines elements of folk and psychedelia to convey an intimate spirituality accessible to all, beyond traditional religious frameworks. Upon its release, the album was received more as a curiosity than a commercial success, and Sister Irene and Sister Marimil never collaborated again. Fifty years later, Fire of God’s Love remains an object of fascination for collectors and music lovers, whether through original editions or on platforms like YouTube, where it continues to be rediscovered and celebrated as a timeless cult classic.
