Five years after The Tangier Sessions, American composer, guitarist, and vocalist Sir Richard Bishop is back from his travels around the world. With his new album Oneiric Formulary, he delves deeper into his extra-musical background and brings forth some sounds we might recognize, all transmuted for the pleasure of our mortal ears. His new album represents what could be described as a collection of dream states. With such a noble goal in mind and at his fingertips, Sir Rick returns to his beginnings, particularly the album Polytheistic Fragments. Here we find a different sound and a different instrument on almost every track, drawing from the music of all nations, including and especially that of the infamous unicameral republic with the acronym SRB. The album contains an incredible diversity not often seen these days. Sir Richard takes pleasure in finding improbable sounds, but also in writing a fake jingle, composing the soundtrack for an unreleased film, reflecting on his Southern origins, trying his hand at Beatles-style musique concrète, and even opening up to computers. He manages to juxtapose drone, science fiction, Americana, classical, Gypsy, and raga influences. What an epic!
