Description

What do we know in Europe about the tradition of street Chôros to interpret Villa-Lobos? About American folk music? The Italian-Brazilian conductor Simone Menezes offers to answer this with the K ensemble, a multicultural orchestra she founded and with which her first album is released under the Aparté label. Just like the works in her program, her musicians come from all corners of the world. To find the original accents of the works it interprets, the K ensemble draws from its roots to get as close as possible to the musical traditions of the pieces it plays. Its goal: to tell each story in its original language. Simone Menezes thus leads her ensemble to Brazil, with the magnificent Chôros No. 5 by Villa-Lobos, into the primitivist Russia of Borodin with the Polovtsian Dances, with the French composer Sophie Lacaze in her exploration of Aboriginal culture with her Histoire sans paroles, all the way back to rural American folklore with Copland's Appalachian Spring ballet and rediscovering the natural inflection of the Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun.
