After Infinite Traffic Everywhere in 2011 under the solo impetus of its creator Sebastian Arnström, then Youth in 2012 as a trio alongside Erik Klinga and Mathias Zachrisson, the Swedish band Simian Ghost returns in 2015 with the new album The Veil, the first to be released in France. For this new record, Simian Ghost isolated themselves in a basement with a multitude of instruments to focus on songwriting with an ear to the future and an eye on the rearview mirror of music history, citing among their influences the brilliant Brian Wilson, composers Gershwin and Debussy, the 90s indie scene with Yo La Tengo and The Flaming Lips, as well as ambient, noise, and some funk & soul gems from the seventies. With elaborate melodies, sophisticated harmonies, and the deceptive appearance of light pop, The Veil addresses themes such as self-dispossession or the lack of affinity with society's ideals. With "Echoes of Songs," Simian Ghost delivers an acknowledged tribute to Trish Keenan, the late singer of Broadcast. One also thinks of Grizzly Bear with the magnificent vocal harmonies of "Float," of Phoenix and Tahiti 80 with the cold groove of "Never Really Knew," of the Icelandic band Sigur Rós with the ethereal melodies of "Endless Chord," or of Bon Iver with the stripped-down yet intimate folk of "August Sun." A magnificent album that will delight fans of the contemporary indie rock scene.
