Shrunken Elvis is a Nashville-based trio consisting of Spencer Cullum, Sean Thompson, and Rich Ruth—three seasoned musicians united by their passion for instrumental music with blurred boundaries. The band emerged from extensive European tours, winter sessions, and an intuitive approach guided by the joy of playing rather than ambition. Spencer Cullum, originally from East London, is a master of the pedal steel who has collaborated with Angel Olsen, Lambchop, Miranda Lambert, and Billy Strings, while also releasing two solo albums blending folk and psychedelia. Sean Thompson, from Nashville's DIY scene, has toured with Margo Price and Skyway Man, while Rich Ruth, signed to Third Man Records, offers solo music combining spiritual jazz, ambient, and post-rock. Their debut album, born from compositions created on the road and refined in a makeshift studio, eschews individual virtuosity. Through a fusion of kosmische, jazz fusion, and ambient influences, Shrunken Elvis draws inspiration from figures like Alice Coltrane, Michael Rother, and Pat Metheny, as well as visual aesthetics from ECM and the cinema of Kurosawa and Bergman. Mixed by Jake Davis and illustrated by Max Kinghorn-Mills, this record is a spontaneous, demanding, and deeply collaborative musical journey.
