Following the cult success of their previous album Waterpistol and their side project The Strands, the album was widely acclaimed by critics. It was ranked the second best album of the year by NME and Uncut, and fifth by Select magazine. With its rich orchestrations and poignant songwriting, H.M.S. Fable confirmed Shack as one of the most underrated yet appreciated bands in the United Kingdom.
