Once upon a time in the pop revolution… More sharp, literate, lively, and talented than the average of his French variety peers in the mid-60s, Gainsbourg also had a keener nose.
In Initials B.B., Bloody Jack, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Bonnie and Clyde (in duet with Bardot, a fleeting but necessarily intense love), Who is “In” who is “out” or Marilu, he elegantly recycled Anglo-Saxon tics, evoking, in turn, the Mersey beat, Phil Spector's productions, and the colorful flower pop.
It was indeed David Whitaker and Arthur Greenslade who signed the arrangements of this best of before the letter that brought together the singles released between 1964 and 1968. Gainsbourg revisited with excellence the phantasmagorical universes of the western (that honky-tonk piano!) and American noir, comic books, and all those taboos that were then defied.
Cooked in the high furnaces of his well-structured verses filled with future anglicisms, his concoction of a personal sexual revolution probably had therapeutic virtues.
