The inventors of lo-fi indie rock are back with fifteen tracks of melodic melancholy, sung by the legend of Dinosaur Jr: Lou Barlow. This is Sebadoh's first album since Defend Yourself in 2013, and Lou Barlow, Jason Loewenstein, and Bob D’Amico are in top form. On Act Surprised, Barlow's lyrics are beautifully introverted, a continuous flow of stories and questions told in a detached tone over dissonant guitars and gut-wrenching tempo changes. It’s a post-grunge postcard with bittersweet melodies, written in an unreadable hand but full of tenderness, leaving a lingering taste of heartbreak.
