Looking Back (Vinyle LP) / Scott Hamilton

Description

I've Grown Accustomed to her Face (Frederick Loewe) - The Maids of Cadiz (Leo Delibes) - Beyond the Bluebird (Tommy Flanagan) - Big Tate (Scott Hamilton) - Rockin' Chair (Hoagy Carmichael) - Noblesse (Gerry Mulligan) - Tune Up (Eddie Vinson) - Hey There (Richard Adler, Jerry Ross) - Shadowland (Dave McKenna) - On a Clear Day (Burton Lane) With "Looking Back," American tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton (born 1954) celebrates his 70th birthday and his entire career with pride and emotion. This album is a retrospective of 10 tracks, dedicated to a small selection of the many musicians who have played a role in his career. If there had been more space on the album, there would also be tracks dedicated to Al Cohn, Gerry Wiggins, Benny Goodman, Flip Phillips, Ed Bickert, Arnett Cobb, Zoot Sims, Benny Carter, Hank Jones, Woody Herman, Jake Hanna… "I'm lucky to have known so many of my heroes," says Hamilton. "I might have to make another album, maybe two!" In the late seventies and early eighties, young Scott Hamilton faced some skepticism because he wasn't following the modernist trend of the time. He found his inspiration in the old jazz masters. While everyone was experimenting compulsively, Hamilton chose another direction, drawing inspiration from Ben Webster, Lester Young, and Coleman Hawkins. And he became an innovator within that tradition. His rich and warm tone, as well as his melodic playing, evoke the golden age of swing with a gentle nostalgia for this timeless music.
