Dehors

Description

After releasing a debut album, Red Forest, in 2022, a performance at the Trans Musicales festival in Rennes and a session on the legendary American radio station KEXP cemented the distinctive identity of a corrosive sound that has mesmerized many. Sarakiniko is his name. It’s both the name of a moon-like beach in Greece and, unknowingly, the translation of “sarrasin” (buckwheat), an iconic plant from his native Brittany. Sarakiniko is a man, Yann Canevet (Venera 4, Future, Maria False), who writes, composes, and records music inspired by his dreams and his aesthetic vision of a beautiful, decaying world. After first transporting us into the deep forests of his poignant and sentimental music, Sarakiniko now spreads his roots into an even more personal soundscape. It's sophisticated, demanding music, yet carved with powerful cuts and chisels from a tree trunk. A somewhat grimy, disturbing pop that he himself calls “mud-pop,” but which ultimately presents itself to the ear as formidably massive shoegaze with delightful echoes of Andrew Weatherall's productions. His second album, “Dehors” (Outside), transports us back to an inner child overwhelmed by their vital impulse. A naive child who rightly utters a few cries upon arriving on Earth. Tender, luminous, and terribly fatalistic, this new stage in Sarakiniko's journey leaves us suspended in poetic and stark lyrics in his childhood language, to resonate even more primally. Hard-hitting words, haunting refrains to sing until the end of time.
