As with her previous record, the Australian singer/pianist/songwriter/arranger, born in Melbourne 28 years ago, collaborated with producer Brian Bacchus (Norah Jones, Lizz Wright, and Gregory Porter). The result? A fascinating album alternating standards and original compositions that once again highlights the incredible musicality of the artist.
Rooted in the tradition of the Great American Songbook, Sarah McKenzie's compositions are largely responsible for the contagious energy that emanates from Paris in the Rain. In addition to the title track and Road Chops, the artist offers us three original compositions where subtlety is the key word.
On One Jealous Moon, a bluesy piece where Ralph Moore delivers an anthology-worthy solo, Sarah McKenzie sings lyrics imbued with deep poetry, once again showcasing her innate talent for playing with words.
While Paris in the Rain once again shines a light on her talents as a composer, this album also reminds us that Sarah McKenzie is an incredibly talented performer, as evidenced by her masterful renditions of Day in Day Out by Johnny Mercer and Rube Bloom, Embraceable You by George and Ira Gershwin, Triste by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Little Girl Blue by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, as well as Tea for Two by Vincent Youmans and Irving Caesar.
