Take Me to a Bar / What Am I, Gatsby? marks a deliberate pivot. The opening and introductory chords of the album seem worthy of marking a scene from a Michael Haneke film in which a stern German woman stomps down a whitewashed hallway. By the time Chadwick's crackling soprano joins in, it feels almost like an intrusion into what had been, until then, a pure mood. "You don't have to listen to all the lyrics," she attests. Chadwick's calling card since his early releases – a jagged and unique immediacy – has been toned down, making way for a subtle crowbar of as much poetry as possible in the songs.
