Parisienne
Description
Being a jazz singer is more like the life of Ulysses than that of Penelope. You travel the world from tour to detour but you always end up coming back home. Thus, Sarah Lancman has sung on every continent, placed her hands on pianos everywhere, and her new album is titled Parisienne - she was born near Châtelet-Les-Halles. This self-portrait in her native city is also a manifesto, showing a singer, author, composer and pianist drawing her way between two languages and several genres, between bliss and melancholy, between purity and virtuosity, between roots and escapes. But that is how she is Parisian, very aware of the tangle of roots between a mother of Moroccan origin and a father half-Breton, half-Ashkenazi - both were born in Paris, by the way. « Elegance and sensuality... » --- JAZZ MAGAZINE ---« SARAH LANCMAN, VELVET IN THE VOICE, THE BREATH OF THE GREATS, THE JUST RIGHT BREATHING OF WORDS AND INTENTIONS. »--- André MANOUKIAN, FRANCE INTER ---« A TIMBRE WITH ENCHANTING LOW NOTES, A RESTRAINT SHROUDED IN MYSTERY, A CHARM NEVER FORCED, Sarah Lancman stands out among French singers for qualities that deserve to be more widely recognized. The delicate touch of pianist Giovanni Mirabassi highlights them well and serves her intimate compositions wonderfully. » --- Louis Julien Nicolaou, TÉLÉRAMA ---« She is truly a great new voice for jazz. » --- QUINCY JONES ---« The most beautiful voice in French jazz returns with a fifth album "PARISIENNE" surrounded by a prestigious line-up: Giovanni Mirabassi (piano), Laurent Vernerey (double bass), Stéphane Huchard (drums) as well as special guests Pierrick Pedron (saxophone) & Marc Berthoumieux (accordion). « Love, jazz, song, it is never as beautiful as when bliss and melancholy, sob and jubilation, tragic dawn and cheerful twilight mingle. It is exactly at this place that Sarah Lancman writes, composes and sings. It is also where we love her. » --- Bertrand Dicale ---.« Listening to Sarah Lancman is like diving into the middle of a Jacques Demy musical. It immediately colors your heart with a bit of pale blue and powdered pink. But this time, we are neither in Nantes nor in Rochefort, but in Paris. A dreamy and sparkling Paris, almost reinvented. Sarah Lancman is Parisian and does not hide it. In this wonderful record, she takes us through small cobbled streets, hidden dead ends, grand brightly lit boulevards and chic avenues. Along the way, she met the Italian pianist Giovanni Mirabassi, a Parisian by adoption for thirty years. They found each other. They never parted. Like an inspired great couturier, Giovanni dressed Sarah's voice. He sublimated it. It is custom-made, it is perfection embracing the singer's vocal undulations. He also perfumed it with a slightly melancholic fragrance, full of joy and spirit. In short, together, they magnify this sensual, luminous and optimistic jazz that we were no longer used to hearing. But they are not alone. Behind them, discreet but indispensable, there is Stéphane Huchard on drums and Laurent Vernerey on double bass. A dream rhythm section. In Parisienne, everything is refined, elegant, stylish. In French or in English, Sarah Lancman sings about love and its crazy love at first sights, its missed rendezvous and its forever regretted separations. She sings about all these old-fashioned pleasures as Aznavour said, to whom she pays homage in « Ton Silence » and from whom she covers one of his songs: « Parce que ». She also revisits « L'hymne à l'amour » by Edith Piaf. On these last two tracks, she wisely invites accordionist Marc Berthoumieux to add that unique touch of all-Parisian nostalgia. She is also joined by saxophonist Pierrick Pedron, more Parker-esque than ever on the sensual « A New Start » and the flamboyant « The Moon And I » with hints of « Afro Blue ». Sarah Lancman brings to life, with her slightly veiled and perfectly sensual voice, an irresistible jazz brimming with love. A little gem. » --- Jacques Prouvost ---.Buy Parisienne at the best price
