At the end of the 90s, Santana was still a musical legend, but he hadn't had a hit in years... The famous Clive Davis, head of Arista, suggested he attempt a comeback with an album full of prestigious collaborations: Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews, Cee-Lo, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Eric Clapton.... The recipe worked beyond all expectations, and the two hits (Maria with Fugees' wizard Wyclef Jean at the helm, and Smooth with Rob Thomas) propelled the album to the top of global charts, including in France where it easily sold over a million copies, Santana's best-ever sales performance in our country.
