Two countertenors for Pergolesi's Stabat Mater: this is the resurrection of the creation of this work in France, brought by two Italian castrati from the Royal Chapel of Louis XV, who were its zealous propagators at the Court as well as at the Concert Spirituel. Paris is ablaze and sees the revolutionary mark of a Neapolitan genius, alas gone so young… Pergolesi, shortly before his death at 26 and tormented by illness, expressed the Virgin's sufferings with the language of passions characteristic of opera. The Stabat Mater, created in 1736, is one of the emblematic works of the baroque period and has profoundly influenced the musical world of the 18th century. To give full splendor to the sumptuous duo of angelic voices lamenting Mary's pain at the foot of the Cross, two interpreters are needed to blend their timbres, just like the two Neapolitan castrati for whom this music was composed.
