Probably a few years later—some sources suggest early 1802—the composer and publisher Peter Lichtenthal (1780-1853) arranged the Requiem for string quartet. His bold transcription, omitting the vocal parts of the soloists and the choir, and, of course, the texts of the Mass for the Dead, remained in manuscript form and was only published at the dawn of the 20th century. Arranging a vocal work into chamber music was not common at that time. However, Joseph Haydn approved the arrangement of his \"Creation\" for quintet, published in 1800 by Anton Wranitzky, and seven of Mozart's operas also saw orchestrations for quartets and quintets in 1799. Mozart's Symphonie Concertante likely remained a manuscript during Mozart's lifetime, as there is no record of any performance. The first publication of the score was made in 1802. Six years later, in 1808, an anonymous arranger published a version for string sextet, giving it the title \"Grande Sestetto Concertante, per due Violini, due Viole, Violoncello primo concertante e Violoncello secondo.\" The choice of a sextet is surprising given that this type of ensemble was only used for the very first time by Luigi Boccherini in Paris in 1776 for his six sextets op.23. No other significant works were known at that time, and it was also uncertain whether the anonymous arranger was familiar with Boccherini's pieces. For the present recording, both arrangements played by the Rusquartet have been revised and reorchestrated by the musicians themselves to enhance the musical sense of the works.
