Saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins returns with a new album, titled The 7th Hand. This new work is comprised of a seven-movement suite performed as a quartet, with Micah Thomas on piano, Daryl Johns on bass, and Kweku Sumbry on drums, as well as special guests such as flutist Elena Pinderhughes and the Farafina Kan percussion ensemble. This hour-long suite of seven movements strives to bring the quartet closer into a complete ensemble from beginning to end, where the music would be entirely collectively improvised. The title is derived from a question steeped in biblical symbolism: if the number six represents the extent of human possibilities, Wilkins wondered what it would be like to invoke divine intervention and allow this seventh element to possess his quartet.
