« A jazz mixed with pop nuances and resolutely turned towards the world of French song »: this is the new direction imagined by Roland Brival for the album « Vol de nuit » which will be in stores on April 9, 2010. After the album « Kayam » (2006) whose brass arrangements evoked the world of American big bands, and whose lyrics (in English, Creole, and French) reflected the author's belonging to the Caribbean world, « Vol de nuit » is in a more intimate register. The quality of the lyrics and the know-how of a writer who, let us remember, has published about fifteen novels to date with various Parisian publishers (Cf. Last publication: « L'Ensauvagé » at Le Serpent à Plumes - 2008); and is preparing to deliver us in the coming months a fictionalized biography of Thelonious Monk which took him three years of work. But, the other originality of the album is revealed in the acoustic color that he has chosen to approach this time. A fresh palette for this stage man accustomed to the volcanic or swaying rhythms of the Creole scene. « I wanted, he tells us, to invite the French from all walks of life to a sensitive listening appointment. To escape from the usual relationship uniting swing with the desire to move at all costs, to better prioritize the content and the very "meaning" of this music. » For those familiar with the artist, the result is all the more surprising and exhilarating as he has also changed his usual vocal register. The deep and gravelly voice immediately imposes itself on unprecedented tones. « Perhaps it is a sign of maturity? », Roland Brival jokes, admitting that he now prefers the lower octaves to those of the medium register where he most often operated in his previous works. Ultimately, with this « Vol de nuit » whose title is meant as a tribute to the work of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry whom he admires, Roland Brival offers us the opportunity for a journey into the most secret part of ourselves, a journey to the heart of this silence from which, he says, all works are born and towards which we will all return one day, illuminated by our only hopes...
