Percussionist, bandleader, and dancer, Roberto Roena was a long-time member of the Fania All-Stars. Named after his band, Roberto Roena y Su Apollo Sound, his first album for Fania Records, released in 1970, innovated salsa instrumentation by using two trumpets, a trombone, and a saxophone in a repertoire of Afro-Cuban classics and covers arranged by Johnny Pacheco.
