The New College Choir of Oxford, one of the world's most important choirs, makes its debut for Linn with a recording of works by the English Renaissance composer John Sheppard. The New College Choir of Oxford was already 150 years old when Sheppard arrived in Oxford to contribute to the richness of choral polyphony typical of the Tudor era. Media vita is his most famous work, almost symphonic in its proportions; the composer combines and develops the musical means of the time in a particularly striking effect. Sheppard's demanding polyphony requires the skills and precision of liturgical professionals and is compelling in the hands of conductor Robert Quinney. The program includes several works by Sheppard presented in world premiere: A solis ortus cardine, Inclina Domine, Iudica me Deus, and Confitebor tibi. A remarkable and elegant new interpretation of this famous choir.
