Three years after No Selfish Heart, RICK REDBEARD, aka Rick Anthony, the frontman of cosmic rock band The Phantom Band, releases Awake Unto, his second solo album. Just as captivating as his first, Awake Unto blends the folk of Michael Hurley, the poetry of Leonard Cohen, and the vocals of Bill Callahan, all enveloped by the aura of Angelo Badalamenti, for a skillful sequence of songs driven by the burnished tone of his baritone voice. Added to this is a celestial melody woven into a tapestry of acoustic guitar, piano, and violin, as well as banjo, accordion, drums, and electric guitars. The album features a wide range of contributors. His sister, Josephine, appears on 'Get Friendly (Blood)', and his colleagues from The Phantom Band also join this rich opus. While the lyrical themes that permeated his first album – love, sex, death, dreams, and memory – hold a significant place, Awake Unto is nonetheless less allusive and more confident than No Selfish Heart.
