Richard Strauss and his qualities as a conductorIn this year 2014, celebrating the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss and his vast production as a composer, is to not forget that he was also one of the greatest conductors of his time.The recordings made from the mid-twenties are there to document his art of conducting.The majority of those gathered in this 7CD edition were made between 1926 and 1933 with the Staatskapelle Berlin for Polydor/Deutsche Grammophon.In 1941, it was with the Bavarian National Orchestra that were captured in Munich A Hero's Life, Don Quixote and two smaller pieces.What distinguishes Richard Strauss from other conductors appears even more strikingly in his readings of the symphonies of Beethoven and Mozart.For him, a perfect knowledge of the scores took precedence over blind fidelity to the text; he did not interpret notes on the paper, but the content and essence of the music. In this sense, the model that Strauss offers us remains timeless.
