Renée was born from the rock 'n roll group René And His Alligators, based in The Hague, founded by René Nodelijk in 1959. Throughout the 1960s, they enjoyed moderate success both on stage and in the studio, and inspired many bands associated with the burgeoning beat scene of the coastal city. Starting in 1967, they performed under various names before taking a break. In 1977, they made a comeback, this time joined by René's wife Anja Nodelijk, née Exterkate. To reflect this new female momentum, the group's name was changed to simply Renée, and they recorded four full albums and a host of singles before dissolving in 1982 to make way for Anja's solo career.
