In 1958, Miles Davis's group was not a quintet but a sextet, with Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophone. Recorded on February 4 and March 4, 1958, "Milestones" is the first studio album made by the sextet. The rhythm section is the same as that of the classic 1956 quintet, with Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums, and Miles Davis, Cannonball, and John Coltrane.
