Radjha Ally, a powerful voice from Mozambique, delivers a vibrant debut album where captivating rhythms and committed lyrics intertwine. On "Niinee," he explores human connections, denounces injustice, and questions war. In a year that marks 50 years of Mozambican independence, his work takes on a particularly special resonance. Driven by his deep roots and a unique voice, each track stirs as much as it makes you want to dance. Niinee, in the Makua language, means "Come dance," and with this album, Radjha invites us to dance! Radjha Ally is a singer-songwriter from Muecate, in the province of Nampula, northern Mozambique. From childhood, he was influenced by the sounds of his region and practiced traditional dance. In the 2000s, he left the North and pursued musical studies in Maputo, where he still resides. Radjha became known to the public in 2020 by winning the televised competition Vozes Que Encantam. This success marked the beginning of his professional career, with the creation of his own band. In 2022, he was invited to participate in IOMMA (Indian Ocean Music Market) on Reunion Island, where he performed for an international audience of music professionals. His performance caught the attention of Saïd Assadi, from the French label Accords Croisés, who decided to support the release of his debut album in Europe. Musically, Radjha Ally navigates between Afro and Afro-jazz, with influences from Lokua Kanza, Zena Bacar (from the group Eyuphuro), Hortêncio Langa, and Jimmy Dludlu. He draws from the rich cultural heritage of northern Mozambique to create a contemporary and deeply rooted work. All of this is sublimated by the inspiration of pan-African icons such as Salif Keita and Youssou N'Dour. His debut album, Niinee, is heavily inspired by Tufu, an emblematic rhythm from the Nampula region. Of Swahili origin, Tufu is traditionally played during community celebrations, weddings, or religious ceremonies in the coastal Muslim communities of northern Mozambique. This musical style, driven by intense percussion, powerful female choirs, and pentatonic melodies, is distinguished by its ability to bring people together, celebrate, and transmit collective values. On Niinee, Radjha reinvents Tufu by fusing it with contemporary arrangements, building a rich, danceable, and deeply African sonic identity. This debut album is produced by the Mozambican structure Khuzula, with musical production by Paulo Chibanga (Tumi & The Volume, 340ml, Bongeziwe Mabandla). The mixing was done by Fabien Girard of the French group Arat Kilo. Through his music and commitment, Radjha Ally establishes himself as an essential figure on the new African music scene, combining modernity, identity, and cultural roots.
