Before it was a band, Rachel's was a constellation. A chance encounter on a streetcar between Jason Noble and Christian Frederickson sparked a series of remote exchanges, homemade tapes, and scribbled scores, as their lives intertwined between studies at the Peabody Conservatory, escapades in Switzerland, New York struggles, and nights as a dishwasher in Louisville. Added to this geographical frenzy was Rachel Grimes, first an improvised music teacher, then a full-fledged pianist and a pillar of the project – which would bear her first name. Alongside bands like Rodan or The Coctails, the members recruited instinctively: classical musicians, literate punks, or unruly sound designers. Between rigor and freedom, they recorded what would become Handwriting, an intense, semi-improvised debut album, released on Quarterstick Records in 1995. More than just a record, Handwriting is the result of a handcrafted and chaotic process, woven by a handful of nomadic artists united around a common idea: to compose free, deep, unclassifiable music. A true "labor of love," adorned with a hand-silk-screened cover by Jeff Mueller (Dexterity Press). Silver vinyl edition.
