A Tale Of The World Piano Quintet
Description
Prodigy child, Olivier Greif studied piano with Lucette Descaves and composition with Tony Aubin at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris. He perfected his skills in New York with Luciano Berio. His work, imbued with spiritual exploration, stands apart from current trends.“To grasp all the musical richness contained in its 5 movements, to sing (in Sanskrit or in Elizabethan English) while playing an instrument, to recite in French, English, Italian, German… thus calling upon not just one world, but indeed ‘a whole world’ at the heart of our artistic experience, was of incredible richness for us” Quintette Syntonia
On a more strictly musical level, this Quintet is marked, as it should be, by the number 5. It consists of five movements linked without interruption, three of which, moreover, bear titles (the first: De profundis, the second: Le Cercle des mondes, the fifth: En Soph, that is to say “near God” in Hebrew). The interval of a fifth is omnipresent. The number 5 frequently appears throughout the work, whether in the counting of beats or measures or in the repetition of certain particular musical formulas. Thus, the piece opens with a fifth interval repeated 25 times (5 x 5).
