Description
« High Spirits » by Joe Harriott is a post-bop album where the quintet of the British-Jamaican saxophonist performs tunes from the eponymous musical by Noël Coward. This album is characterized by its melodic, swinging, and accessible nature, and highlights the powerful and lyrical playing of Harriott and trumpeter Shake Keane, on arrangements by pianist Pat Smythe. Unlike the freer experiments that made Harriott famous at that time, « High Spirits » fits into a more traditional post-bop style, with a strong swing.
