To Haydn, brilliant trailblazer, the Hanson Quartet is grateful! All shall not die echoes the Non omnis moriar engraved on the tomb of Joseph Haydn, in Vienna. The Latin epitaph acknowledges the immortality of the composer through his work, eternal. Recording his quartets is certainly paying tribute to the guiding figure of the classical period, but it is above all about bringing to life the musical legacy of one who, laying the foundations of the genre, already explored its timbral, formal, and stylistic possibilities! To unveil this richness, the young musicians have chosen six quartets in which Haydn alternates between lyrical, baroque, playful, or dramatic, from the birth of the genre to its first romantic stirrings. While the Hanson Quartet plays with form by subverting the listener's expectations (like Haydn himself), and heightens certain nuances, the thought behind their phrasing is humbly nourished by historical recordings. The Hansons make their entry into the discography with a composer who resembles them: bold, rebellious, and inventive.
