At the end of the 1970s, Athens, Georgia, was buzzing with a music scene that was both raw and sophisticated. Traditional Southern rock had long been Georgia's musical flagship, but the turn of the decade saw the emergence of new sounds, driven by bands like the B-52's, R.E.M., and the iconic figures of alternative rock, Pylon.Before forming a band, the members of Pylon were art students at the University of Georgia: four young people driven by big ideas about art, creativity, and society. Pylon was less a band than an artistic project, with specific goals and a limited lifespan. Although their musical adventure was brief (1979-1983), Pylon left a lasting mark on the history of rock and roll. Despite their short existence, they managed to create an influential body of work that contributed to the rise of the post-punk and art-rock scene of the early 80s. Artists like R.E.M., Gang of Four, Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, Interpol, Deerhunter, and many others claim inspiration from the band.
