It was recorded and mixed at Studio Midi Live (formerly Studios VOG) and at Studio La Forge for "9-3", the second album by Principles Of Joy, by Tom VDH, the resident sound engineer of the Q-Sounds Recording label. The in-house songwriting duo Ludovic Bors/Christelle Amoussou handled writing the repertoire, thus extending the work begun on the first album. Like the group's home department which gives the album its name, the 12 tracks on the record are at once Rough, Intense and Deep. The two Soul sisters Sarah Ibrahim and Rachel Yarabou lend their powerful voices to songs that explore the vicissitudes of life and Love. Tracks like "The Man I want", "No Matter What" or "Best Life" draw from the mid-tempo Southern productions of the Hi studios as much as from classic New York Hip Hop: powerful drums, hypnotic bass and catchy loops that would make more than one beatmaker envious. "Ready To Go" or "God Only Knows" are true Up tempo Northern Soul tracks reminding us that Soul is dance music that nourishes the soul and the body. With tracks like "Be Good To Me" or "Start from Scratch", the group's music takes on a cinematic and psychedelic dimension, following in the footsteps of artists like Curtis Mayfield, Willie Hutch or The Goblins. Finally, Principles Of Joy pays tribute to Deep Soul and Blues through the poignant Down Tempo "It's Been A Mess" and their powerful cover of the Adele classic: "He won't Go". Principles Of Joy is one of the most exciting groups on the contemporary Soul scene, and it is on vinyl that they engrave their testimony!
