Following Prefab Sprout's resurgence in grace earlier this year with the re-release of I Trawl The Megahertz, and before their new album announced in a few months, here are 4 vinyl records from the Prefab Sprout catalog:
Swoon: (1984) the debut album, remarkably complex in terms of composition. Paddy McAloon's musical ambitions were already evident: orchestral pop with sophisticated arrangements (even if recording resources seemed limited), and melodic emphasis borrowed from American musicals. In 1984, the album received excellent critical acclaim from the specialized press. Single vinyl
From Langley Park to Memphis (1988): the third album, which confirmed their success and popularity with two certified "MTV" hits: Cars And Girls, and The King Of Rock N Roll. The album went Gold in France (>100K units). Cars And Girls remains a radio "gold" hit even today.
Single vinyl
Jordan The Come Back (1990): 19 tracks, double vinyl. For some, this album, along with Steve McQueen, represents the artistic peak of P.S.'s career. These two albums are the result of the collaboration between Paddy McAloon and producer Thomas Dolby. Here again, McAloon's melodic mastery sweeps across all the genres he loves (musicals, film soundtracks, hyper-arranged orchestral pop, etc.).
A Life of Surprises: The Best of Prefab Sprout. If you can only have one, then this is the double vinyl PS record to own. Featuring Cars And Girls, When Love Breaks Down, The King Of Rock N Roll. Double vinyl
