Point Line Plane

Description

Between 2002 and 2005, the synth-punk duo from Portland, Point Line Plane, played 150 shows across the United States. Singer and keyboardist Joshua Blanchard (Major Hex) and drummer Nathan Carson (Witch Mountain) first honed their nearly telepathic stage chemistry during blistering 20-minute live sets. By the end of their musical journey, their discography included two studio albums, the soundtrack to a documentary about haunted houses, and a multitude of tracks on compilations and singles. The band made a name for themselves by creating noisy music with catchy pop melodies. As electro was waning and screechy dance-punk/neo-no wave enjoyed a brief resurgence, college radio kids and DJs took notice of PLP's eclectic and original style, often comparing their sound to other innovative groups like Liars, Ex-Models, and Lightning Bolt. Concrete comparisons, however, were hard to pin down. Critics, both in print and online, often favored metaphors over explicit influences. After their self-titled debut album, Point Line Plane briefly transformed into a trio and joined the SKiN GRAFT Records label for their second album, "Smoke Signals." Toward the end of this period, their sound shifted toward darker tones, reflecting more restraint, tension, and drama. Repetition, hypnosis, psychedelia, paranoia, darkness: these ingredients combined to satisfy fans of extreme noise with sophisticated sonic textures, as well as lovers of more classic and melodic compositions. In 2026, the original duo will resume activity after a 22-year hiatus, and their long-lost debut album has been fully restored and remastered. Originally released only on CD and unavailable for over two decades, "Point Line Plane" is now available for the very first time on vinyl, download, and streaming platforms.
