LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN (vinyl)

Description

Originally created for the stage under the name Playing Carver, the album brings together European musicians from the worlds of pop, indie rock, and chanson: John Parish (Pj Harvey, Dominique A, Eels, Rokia Traoré, Arno, ...), Marta Collica (Sepiatone, John Parish Band, ...), GaspardLaNuit and the members of Atlas Crocodile: Boris Boublil (Robi, Surnatural Orchestra, Wladimir Anselme, ...), Jeff Hallam (Robi, Dominique A, My Friend Jeff,...), Csaba Palotaï (Emily Loizeau, Grupa Palotaï, ...) & Marion Grandjean (Clarys). The work of Raymond Carver, an emblematic American writer of the last decades of the 20th century*, depicts, through short stories and poems, tales of very ordinary people. His everyday poetry, rough, bruised, plunges us into the dizzying abyss of life's banal beauty; revealing in itself the illustration of the inexhaustible bric-a-brac of the human comedy... Appropriating this universe and drawing inspiration from it to write songs and music, this is the unique and singular project of Playing Carver. Raymond Carver, a storyteller of a decadent and always surprising Americana, is revisited here from the perspective of the old continent, like an enduring fantasy of America, digested and magnified under the distorting magnifying glass. The musicians come together both around a common language of music and literature, and at the crossroads of different languages: Italian, French, British English, American English, French English, or even Hungarian. The aim here is not to reappropriate Carver's texts, but truly to draw musical inspiration from them. Rather than a project with multiple entities, the strength of the album lies in the synergy of musicians who have already worked together in rich and varied contexts and who each agree on the sparkling vein of Carver, to draw inspiration from it and share it. It is a fantasized music that brings them together, with a strong pop-rock accent, and an aftertaste borrowed from film scores from the "Trente Glorieuses" – stories of cars, tics and tocs, madness, fear of dying, men and women from good families, unbridled evenings. Music that is both dark and cheerful, simple and tortured.
