Following the dissolution of monasteries initiated in 1534 under the reign of the English sovereign Henry VIII, followed by the bloody repression led by his daughter Mary Tudor, Protestants became victims of religious persecution. Many composers in the kingdom then decided to distance themselves from religion and refocus on the creation of secular works. It is in this difficult context that the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book was written, the most important collection of music for the virginal or harpsichord in England, probably at the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. Preserved today at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, it is likely the work of several authors, although its precise origin remains difficult to determine. Thus, the works of more than thirty major composers from the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras (Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons, etc.) are compiled here by these anonymous copyists, along with nearly fifty pieces of uncertain attribution.
