With only five songs, there’s a lot to take in here as ‘Pale’ kicks off proceedings with pounding beats and an overwhelmingly atmospheric vibe; there’s an almost fuzzy sound that takes a moment to adjust to, but perfectly sets up the remaining four tracks. This is the kind of music that is almost impossible to define, in precisely the right way. Layers of ambient sound, pounding drum beats and post-hardcore riffs set the backdrop for Zac Vernon’s raw and passionate vocals – there’s something about this combination of styles that just shouldn’t work, and doesn’t, but in a fascinating and addictive way. While not overtly sounding like the black metal that inspired Vernon’s earlier years, both recent single ‘Without Sin’ and the title track ‘Ensom’ wrap themselves in all its darkness, channelling the genre’s atmosphere and distortion.\n\n‘Ensom’ is a genuinely immersive and haunting body of songs, that shows spectacular maturity and a wonderfully fresh approach to alternative rock. This isn’t about big hooks or instant gratification – though there are still some to be found.
